Study Results in Truso Valley

On August 18th, 2013, a special commission conducted field research concerning the conditions of the Truso Valley mineral water spring and its carbon dioxide gas deposits. The research objective was to evaluate the impact of boring a well (owned by Ltd Kasara) on the natural formations, such as Truso Travertine and Abano Mineral Water Lake located in the territory of Kazbegi National Park, as well as Keterisi Karst Spring situated on the national park’s border.

The field commission was composed of the Director of the Administration of Kazbegi National Park – Otar Tsamalaidze, expert geologists – Ucha Zviadadze, Irakli Mikadze and Niko Sabauri, natural resources specialist – Marina Chkareuli, Head of the Local Municipality Council – Giorgi Kirikashvili, representatives of Ltd Kasara – Sergo Neparidze and Gocha Malania, Deputy Head of the Agency Protected Areas – Lassha Moistsrapishvili and the Agency staff – Toma Dekanoidze, Khatuna Tsiklauri and Avtandil Mikaberidze.

Based on the above-mentioned studies, two members of the commission, Ucha Zviadadze and Niko Sabauri claimed that the results of boring the well have had no impact whatsoever on the research objects. Irakli Mikadze, however, thought that there might be very slight utilization impact on the Truso Travertine, Abano Mineral Water Lake and the carbonic mineral water system based on the geological situation.

The specialists shared a common perspective on how to monitor the effects the well has on the surrounding natural formations. Specifically, the owner of the well should develop a utilization plan. This plan should be presented to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia for approval and all monitoring measures outlined within the plan should be conducted on a regular basis. Truso Valley’s unique nature formations, such as Abano Mineral Water Lake, Keterisi Karst Spring and travertine should also be taken into consideration in the monitoring processes. Analysis of the results of long-term monitoring will give experts a more informed picture from which they can draw conclusions pertaining to the utilization impact the carbon dioxide gas deposit has on the natural formations of Truso Valley.
