Lagodekhi Protected Areas is hosting an important international event in the field of nature conservation.
Over the course of the week, Lagodekhi will host the meeting of the Steering Committee of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), bringing together around 30 international experts and Commission members in Georgia.
At the opening of the event, Tamar Khakhishvili, Deputy Chair of the Agency of Protected Areas, introduced participants to Georgia’s protected areas system and management practices, with particular emphasis on the international significance of Lagodekhi Protected Areas.
The event provides Georgia with an opportunity to share its protected areas management practices with international experts and present the vision of relevant government institutions for the long-term, sustainable development of the country’s protected areas system.
Particular importance is attached to Lagodekhi Protected Areas, Georgia’s oldest protected area, established in 1912. It is a candidate for the European Diploma of Protected Areas and is in the candidacy phase for the IUCN Green List.
Hosting international experts provides an important opportunity to showcase the achievements of Georgia’s protected areas and support their further international recognition.
